Halitosis (the
medical term for bad breath) is a fairly common problem in US and in
other places around the world. Many people experience bad breath when
they get up in the morning or after they eat garlic or onions.
Halitosis might be a temporary condition or it might be a more serious
medical problem. In some cases it might even affect the personal life
and the emotional state of a person.
Cause of Halitosis
Halitosis can be caused by a number of factors. One of
the more common factors is food, especially food containing volatile
oils. Onions, garlic and special spices are some of the examples of
volatile oil. Another common factor which causes halitosis is dry
mouth. Saliva generally helps to keep the mouth clean and moist. When
mouth is dry, dead cells are able to accumulate on tongue and gums.
Then these dead cells decompose and start to release unpleasant odor.
Another cause of halitosis is insufficient and/or poor practice of
dental hygiene. More Information.
Treatments and Products
One of the ways to address halitosis is to practice
good dental hygiene. This might help to reduce or even eliminate the
unpleasant smell. There are also a number of commercially available
products that might be quite valuable in this regard. If the smell is
persistent and does not go away, it might be a sign of a more serious
dental and/or health condition. Consult with your dentist and with your
doctor on what would be the best way to treat this condition.
