Most of us believe that brushing our teeth can get rid of the cause of bad breath but, unfortunately, its not always as simple a problem to cure as that. The reason for this is that bad breath doesn’t just come from forgetting to brush after you have finished eating. Like most medical issues there are some obvious reasons for the problem, as well as some reasons that would probably never occur to you. They do say, though, that knowledge is power, so it follows that if you know why you have bad breath then you will also know what do to fix it rather than simply brushing your teeth. Lets look at how you can find the cause of bad breath.
One of the most common causes of bad breath is poor oral hygiene. This is the easiest issue to tackle because you simply have to develop good habits with brushing to keep the problem from recurring. If, after you brush regularly, your bad breath goes away then you have probably found found the answer. When you are out and about and brushing is inconvenient, and these days that can happen a lot, then a simple solution is to just chew some minty gum to keep the problem at bay until you can brush again. If possible, carry a small pack with a toothbrush and a small tube of toothpaste around with you – most restaurants have a restroom so you can always pop in there after your meal and have a quick brush.
The next thing that could be causing your bad breath is the food that you eat. Although there’s not much you can do about that, it does help to know which foods are the worst culprits so that you can avoid them or, at least, cut down on them if you are heading for an important meeting or to a romantic liaison. Those are probably the 2 worst time when you would probably rather die than have bad breath. The usual culprits are garlic and onion, but they are by no means the only foods that cause bad breath. The easiest way to find out is by a simple process of elimination. Although this can take some time, you can usually figure it out soon enough.
You may also have problems with your breath because your brushing habits are not good enough no matter how well or how often you do it. Food that gets stuck between your teeth is a huge problem and can be unsightly as well as cause a nasty stink – not nice!. Most of this food can be easily taken care of with careful brushing, but not all. The best answer is to floss after every meal. This will remove stubborn food particles from between your teeth that a brush simply cannot get in to. Regular flossing not only helps bad breath but it also significantly reduces plaque and tartar build-up so your dentist will love you and you wont need to worry about gum disease, bleeding gums and tooth decay. .
The final cause of bad breath tends to be a build up of bacteria or an infection. You may have a cavity of which you are not aware, or perhaps you have not been brushing your tongue, inside of cheeks, or the roof of your mouth. These are all danger areas and arent helped by simply gargling mouthwash – you need to brush and floss! You can always hit all areas of your mouth when you brush, and then see a dentist if you have bad breath of which you can find no cause. You may find an infection in your mouth that can be taken care of and your bad breath will disappear.
Bad breath can be a symptom of poor dental hygiene or even more serious underlying health issues. Don’t treat it as an inconvenience – do something about it!! Your health and your partner will thank you for it.
